Bottom 4 - Fans review Posted by Dave on October 3, 2001, 2:04pm
Well, I saw the show at Wolverhampton last night and I've got to admit I think it's the funniest one yet. Maybe the lack of a coherent storyline adds to the mayhem of it all. The first act is on a beach, not unlike Hooligans Island and the second act is in a small nuclear-like bunker that is popped on the front of the stage with the rest blacked out. Neither location is ever explained, you don't know why they're there and they never bother to tell you.
This Bottom show is probably the most energetic, even though there aren't as many fights as previous shows. In no particular order we have: Exploding parrots, milking a wild boar which then proceeds to run across the stage dragging Eddie with it (you have to see it to believe it!), underpant removal by chainsaw, Richie's freshly dug grave with the words engraved on the tombstone "Here lies the fat twat, piss here" written on. A fully functioning bar in a tree trunk, Richie masturbating while giving mouth to mouth to a dead parrot and last but not least a full on sing song at the end with the tune "Pants" helped along with a gorgeous Gibson SG guitar being lowered from the rafters and Ade Edmondson reminding us how good a guitar player he was in "Bad News", playing so energetically that he slipped and fell flat on his back causing Rik to break down in laughter, Ade though never missed a note. What a guy.
There were a few problems with the show I saw, Ade's mike kept cutting out and so he used a hand mike for the last 20 minutes of the show, some of the pyro explosions were incredibly delayed causing Ade to yell at someone off-stage. Both microphones were feeding back terribly at one point creating a low, very loud, rumble in the theatre causing Rik to say "Is it a bad to time to talk about planes right now?" he got a few boos but I myself found his honesty and quick-thinking fantastically funny.
We also had a very annoying heckler in the audience who was literally shouting his lungs out at them at one point. Rik and Ade told him the usual "#### offs" and "You're dead when you go outside", Rik then asked the entire audience to point at this pratt and shout wanker at him, we duly concurred.
Also after the show I my girlfriend and I waited at the stage door for 30 mins to try to meet them. We were fobbed off by their driver, (we found their blacked-out windowed space van) he had actually told us 15 mins before that they had already left.
When we followed the car, it drove to a side door and stopped about 10 feet away on the kerb. The door opened and about 10 security people created a passageway for them and out they came, Ade with a baseball cap practically over his face and Rik with a hooded sweat top on, himself holding the hood closed around his face. They never acknowledged the crowd, they were out the door and in the car in 5 seconds. I couldn't believe it there was only 10 people gathered around if that, couldn't they stop to do an autograph or two?
Anyway, thats the story of my night, hope you enjoyed it, cos it's definitely worth your £20 and two hours of your time.

I and a friend, both Bottom fans of many years saw the show on Tues at Wolvs, whilst we both enjoyed it like fellow reviewer Dave we thought it lacked that little something.
The first act was by far the best, the second act mostly ad-libbed I think and no where near as funny. We didn’t come away as hopped with sides aching from laughter but a little disappointed. This was largely due to the lack of a cohesive story to bind the show together, sorry Rik and Ade I think you need to work a bit harder on the plot. Never the less a great night out and good to see the lads live for the first time.

Bottom Live 4 Posted by STewy on October 6, 2001, 10:48am
Well, I just went to see it last night, and it was good. Although, this time, there is actually no plot lol. However, I got front row seats, but they were far right, and we couldn't see the right side of the stage, where the grave was which was rubbish. So we complained at the interval, and got seats in the middle Also, when the parrot blew up, the speakers near us cut out, and we couldn’t hear them very well. Which made us more angry. Not many messed up lines, 1 or 2 missed sound effects for punches. Hope they do another one.

The F'N Amazing show I witnessed on Fri 12th Oct 2001 Posted by Scouse Pete on October 13, 2001, 11:45am
Well, what can I say! Without doubt the best bottom show ever. They are on form! They bring out the best in each other!! It was made funnier with some fat scouse twat in the front row hurling abuse at Rik. Rik totally embarrassed the scouse fart!! In fact Rik also told some twat to jump for saying "have a wank"!! Ha Ha!!
Do you know what, I will buy a tix for the DEC 11th show, it is that good! Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson are the "best" comedy duo EVER!!!
Enjoy the show, there's no doubt you will!!

Hull Show Posted by CHRI5 on October 19, 2001, 11:23pm
I just got back from the Hull City Hall show, and it was the funniest thing I have ever seen. Ade even farted (for REAL) midway through the show. Any other questions, post them here.

I also saw the show in Cardiff and it was awfully disappointing. there was no story, no new gags at all and they openly laughed at the fact that they just wanted the money. To top it off the sound quality was bad and we couldn't hear it properly from the back, and some of the audience wrecked it by being thick-shits who just shouted out the first thing that came into their heads all the way through the second half. (At one point the house lights came up and the security took out one of the audience). Altogether i feel completely ripped off and would never see them again. They say it's best to go out at the top and I think rick and ade would have been wise to do so.
Manchester Apollo - ? October, 2001
Apollo gig was outstanding!! Posted by Dave on October 31, 2001, 10:51am

Edinburgh Playhouse - 7th November, 2001
I Met Rik :-D Posted by Fudge on November 8, 2001, 12:09pm
Last night i was at the Edinburgh show which was AMAZING. they ####ed up tons of times and they even managed to throw a heckler out, but before he went ade shouted (On a lighter note, thanks for the cash) - what a comeback.
Anyway, after the show we (me & my friends) rushed to the stage door in the pouring rain to see about 20 others there. So we thought we'd never get a chance, then after about 30 minutes the door opened and a guy told us to form an orderly line which we all did, then we were all amazed to see that it was Rik Mayall signing anything, as well as posing for photos.
I managed to get my Poster & program signed, as well as a photo taken with him. I also had a brief conversation with him about 'Drop Dead Fred' Even after all this he still shook everyones hands and continued to sign autographs. Let me tell you this, If you ever meet him, He is one of the nicest people I have ever met, as well as being funny when he's not on stage. I'M SO HAPPY :-)

Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow - 8th and 9th November, 2001
Glasgow 8 and 9 November 2001 Posted by Graeme Rennie on November 12, 2001, 10:25am
Went to see 'Bottom' on Thursday and Friday. Both entertaining shows, the first night was a standard show, both Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson wanted to do their act and exit. On the second night the audience atmosphere was unrivalled, too electric to be put into words. On the second night a large amount of effort went into the overall production, although the script was word perfect from the previous night there was a fair amount of abuse directed at our fallen First Minister Henry McLeish, who had resigned over fraud the previous day.
On the second night, Rik Mayall was more upbeat. There was a large amount of abuse directed at him, more than often, for the first ten minutes of the second half there was some idiots in the audience attempting to interrupt the show, of course Rik was quick to notice and displayed his usual outburst of telling them to jump. In the first half of the second night after 'Dave' the parrot had been...well you know, Ade asked whether he was Catholic or Prodsent (too early in the morning), from which an audience member retorted Catholic, this didn't go down well considering the football rivalry in Scotland, Rik shot the man down in flames by doing an impression of the audience member stating 'Yeah he was my boyfriend, and he said you were crap in bed', of course the man continued throughout the first half, he was overshadowed by the microphone sound. There was a fair amount of alcoholic jokes about the bar and how Scottish people like a drink.
On both nights Rik Mayall dedicated twenty minutes of the show to pissing off the Scots with his Scottish accent, abuse about our local football teams and how Glasgow was a 'shithole'. Of course the audience reacted throughout, but he continued. Adrian whispered to Rik that 'he was going to die here tonight', making suggestive wanking signals behind his back and becoming very popular with the audience.
On both nights I decided not to brave the Scottish weather in standing by the stand door waiting, because knowing the reputation Glasgow has, and the abuse they received, there was no point because they would not come out. I left knowing that I had finally seen my 'hero' Rik Mayall live.
He received the biggest applause, although I didn't get to meet him, I know by the end of next year I will.
Plymouth Pavillions - 13th November, 2001
I just saw Bottom 4 Plymouth 1 of 2 Posted by Shayn on November 13, 2001, 11:34pm
Well I just got back from the first of two shows in Plymouth Pavillions. SO great ! It was funny, I liked the fact that there was basically no plot , well it was forgotten halfway through the first half LOL Many screwups - very funny, the defibrillator machine blew up before it was supposed to, and Eddie said - I think I will just abandon the script for a minute to ask something ....... Is it safe ? Huge laughs from that. The pig track didn’t fit on the stage, Plymouth stage is not very big so the prop guys had to carry the pig around to the front of the stage .Eddie and Ritchie just stood there laughing- There is a bit of a #### up here ...... Can you spot it ? so funny there was alot of adlibbin which I thought was great , there were many hecklers which were excellently dealt with, nobody got chucked out though hehe well that's it
SOOOO sadly I couldnt hang around after to get something signed or meet them but there are still like 30 more shows right ? hehehe
Oh yeah and I was on the 5th row ! haha and I used a roll of film so you will see them in a few days I really want to go again tonight but I would get crap seats this late. bye for now

Well mate.......I was in row 4.......a great night and worth approx £20 of anybodys money to see who I consider to be the funniest pairing we have ever come with ! - However I feel I must express a slight bit of sadness at the show....It was no-where near the standards of the first 3 and I did feel a bit cheated at the second half of the show ! As for the "Addlibs" - great as ever.....To determine which (if any) errors were genuine then we have to wait till the DVD out next week. As for the song.......WHAT A SINGLE THAT WOULD MAKE ! - my mate with me took many a photo and even some vid on his dig cam.....cant wait till that comes out - keep me going till dvd release ! - Dont get me wrong.....I loved it......really loved it as ever...but I would be lying if I didnt think it could be better. (I expect the "Pig Track" didnt fit on any stage in the country. But I luv them !Heres to number 5 !
Oxford Apollo - 15th November, 2001
Bottom In Oxford Posted by TS on November 16, 2001, 10:19 am
Hi All! My Girlfriend and I just got back from The first Oxford Apollo date last night!! Wicked to the extreme! We were both really worried that Rik & Ade had lost it having seen BOTTOM LIVE 3 and that "film", but last night we were both proved utterly bloody wrong!! Rik & Ade were on top form, not seen them like that since the second tour! They were absolutely brilliant, only two people got chucked out and Ade was superb at telling hecklers to f**k off! In fact at one point he shouted "These people haven't paid good money to listen to some twat shout out in the dark!" and then went on to say; "They've paid good money to watch two twats shout out on the stage!" Loud applause!!
The first half was brilliant, lots of excellent jokes about Blair and the Taliban! Excellent stuff. The second act was excellent, they way they talked about themselves and the way Rik described himself as "that fat twat who fell off his quad bike!" was genius! In fact Rik got a pair of panties thrown at him (before the song!)
It was a brilliant come back for the lads, it was so good to see them in the flesh and to see them both so good at what they love and do so well.
Hope to see BOTTOM LIVE 5 in a few years lads. Keep it up!

Just got back from the last date for Bottom 2001 (23rd Nov). I don't give a shite what anybody else thinks, I pissed myself laughing all the way through and will continue to do so all the time bottom is around.
I threw a pair of s*** covered (brown paint really!) huge Y-fronts at richie when they both put a pair on towards the end of the show - he picked them up off the floor, looked at them, shouted URRRRGH! and then chucked them to the side!!!
The show was fantastic. Roll on the next Bottom Live!!!

Saw the show at Hammersmith last night. What can I say. It was f***ing BRILLIANT. They were on top form and a good nite was had by all. The only disappointing bit was that they didn't sign anything at all, just jumped into a car and away they had gone.
They definatley haven't lost it.
£22 well spent. Richie and Eddie 4eva!!!
